In Minsk, the heart of the Republic of Belarus, there are many picturesque places that tourists cannot ignore. Let’s talk about the five main attractions of the capital.
Minsk Gate
Coming out of the railway station building, the guests of Minsk see two monumental 11-storey towers in the style of the Stalinist Empire, which have long been the hallmark of the city. On top of one of them there is a war trophy from Germany – a century-old clock with a diameter of 3.5 meters, the other is decorated with the coat of arms of the BSSR. Four sculptures are installed along the perimeter of the towers: a peasant woman, a soldier, a partisan and an engineer.
Dynamo Stadium
The majestic building in the city center acted as the football arena of the Olympics-80, an ice rink in winter, a huge clothing market in the 90s and a concert venue where performances by Viktor Tsoi, Yuri Shevchuk, A-Ha, The Prodigy and many others took place. Today, the stadium is the home field of the Belarusian national football team and FC Dynamo. Independence Square
One of the largest squares in Europe is located near the train station and occupies more than seven hectares. The Government House, the Red Church, former apartment buildings, the Minsk hotel, the Main Post Office and two universities are located here. Next to the square there is a 15-kilometer highway – Independence Avenue, which claims to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Upper Town
This is the historical center of Minsk, where the picturesque sights of the Belarusian capital are concentrated: the city hall, the former Gostiny Dvor, the Basilian monastery, the Jesuit Collegium, the House of Freemasons, the Arch-Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, the Europa Hotel and the Vankovich manor house. Tourists who stroll along the ancient streets, built up with buildings in different styles (from Baroque and classicism to modern and eclectic), have a wonderful view of the Svisloch River. The landscape is especially fascinating when the rays of the setting sun play on the surface of the water.
Trinity suburb
The Trinity suburb is located on the left embankment of Svisloch. These are comfortably located European-style houses no higher than three floors with mansard roofs, connected by cobbled streets and courtyards. Museums, souvenir shops, galleries, a bookstore with an impressive collection of second-hand books, cafes with traditional dishes of national cuisine comfortably coexist in a small patch of the old part of the city, popular among residents of the capital and tourists.
